Air purifiers
Part of: Air filtration and air purifiers
Also: air purifier, air cleaner, portable air cleaner, room air cleaner
A portable device that draws room air through a filter or another removal stage and returns it to the same room. It removes part of what is already airborne, chiefly particles, and does not bring in outdoor air or stop what continues to be emitted.
What it is
A portable air cleaner is filtration without ductwork: a fan, one or more removal stages, and a room. Its effect is decided by how much clean air it delivers per hour against the size of the room and against everything else removing or adding particles at the same time — so the honest measure is the delivered clean air rate for the room it stands in, not the filter class printed on the box.
Stages differ in what they can do. A fibrous particle filter removes particles, including the ultrafine fraction, and does so reliably. A sorbent stage removes some gases while it has capacity, and releases nothing useful once it is loaded. Stages that generate ozone or reactive species to destroy pollutants can create new ones.
What it does not do is equally fixed. It does not supply oxygen or remove carbon dioxide, so it is not a substitute for ventilation; and against a source that keeps emitting, it lowers a concentration it never stops.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
