Indoor plants (phytoremediation)

Also: phytoremediation, houseplants

Houseplants can absorb volatile organic compounds in sealed laboratory chambers, but in real rooms the effect on air quality is negligible — hundreds of plants per room would be needed to match ordinary ventilation.

Why it matters indoors

The idea comes from NASA chamber experiments of the 1980s. Later work translating chamber removal rates to real rooms found that one would need roughly 10 to 1000 plants per square metre to equal the clean-air delivery of a modest ventilation rate. Plants are good for wellbeing and humidity, but they are not an air-cleaning measure; presenting them as one is a common marketing claim the evidence does not support.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
