Laminate flooring

Part of: Flooring

Also: laminate floor, laminate

A floor covering of a printed decorative layer over a high-density fibreboard core, click-fitted over an underlay. The core is bonded with formaldehyde resins and the surface layers with adhesives, so a newly laid floor is one of the largest single emitting surfaces in a room.

Why it matters indoors

A floor is the largest continuous surface in most rooms, so even a modest emission rate per square metre produces a high loading — the emitting area divided by the room volume — compared with a piece of furniture. That is why a newly laid laminate floor changes the air of a room measurably, while the same board used as a shelf would not.

What it emits

The high-density fibreboard core is bonded with formaldehyde resins, so formaldehyde is the leading emission; chamber work on laminate flooring also tracks benzene and total volatile organic compounds alongside it. Room measurements after installing two products labelled as compliant with the California Air Resources Board rules recorded mean formaldehyde of 0.038 ppm and 0.022 ppm (≈ 47 µg/m³ and ≈ 27 µg/m³ at 25 °C), and levels returned to the pre-installation background seven days after the flooring was removed. Wooden floorings in general also release aldehydes from the adhesives and terpenes from the wood itself.

How long it lasts

Emission decays rather than stops. A chamber model built for laminate flooring describes formaldehyde, benzene and volatile organic compound concentrations as a first-order exponential in time, rising with temperature — a warm room releases more, and releases it sooner. How long elevated levels persist is genuinely disputed: a reanalysis of the same product test data concluded that effects persist for long periods, against an earlier assessment that they dissipate within several years.

Who is sensitive

The exposure lands on whoever spends time on and near the floor, which in practice means small children, and anyone whose airways or skin already react — the connection runs through asthma and atopic dermatitis rather than through the flooring itself.

What to look for on the label

Emission classes are set by chamber tests: the European E1 class, the stricter German and Japanese classes, and the California Air Resources Board Phase 2 rule for composite wood. A class describes the board under test conditions, not the room — the loading, ventilation and temperature of the actual room decide the concentration.

What it means in your room

An emission rate from a technical sheet becomes a concentration only once the area installed, the room volume and the ventilation are known:

From emission rate to room concentration

Estimates the steady-state concentration a product produces in a room from its area-specific emission rate, the area installed, the room volume and the air exchange rate.

c(µg/m³) ≈ (SER(µg/(m²·h)) × A(m²)) ÷ (V(m³) × n(h⁻¹)). Assumes steady state: emission and removal have balanced out. At an air exchange rate of 0.5 h⁻¹ that takes about six hours; before then the concentration is lower.; perfect mixing: the room is one well-stirred volume, with no gradient between the floor and the ceiling and no still corner.; constant emission: the rate is the one on the sheet and does not fall over the days and weeks after installation, which in reality it does.; no other source of the same substance in the room, and none coming in with the outdoor air.; no sink: nothing is adsorbed on surfaces, taken up by furnishings or removed by a filter or by chemistry.. Alternatives with evidence

Comparative work on flooring types measures what each option emits rather than assuming: solid wood with a low-emission finish, parquet, and floors installed without glue all shift the balance between resin emissions and the wood’s own terpenes. The measured comparison belongs in the data table on flooring, not in a general claim that one material is clean.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.

How strong is the evidence

A Claim is Coridum reading the Findings together, not a quotation from one study — according to Coridum. The grade follows the study designs behind it: A is the strongest, D means a single study or a mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a new laminate floor keep emitting?

Emission falls exponentially rather than stopping: measurements after installation show the steepest drop in the first weeks, and chamber work models the decay as a first-order exponential that is faster in warm rooms. Published reanalyses of the same product data disagree on whether elevated levels persist for months or for years, so the honest answer is months at least, and longer in warm, poorly ventilated rooms.

Does an emission label mean the floor is safe?

It means the product passed a chamber test under standard conditions. Measurements in real rooms with products labelled as compliant still recorded formaldehyde around 0.038 ppm and 0.022 ppm after installation, because a real room has more floor area per cubic metre of air, less ventilation and often higher temperature than the test chamber.

Does the underlay or the adhesive matter?

Yes. The decorative and backing layers are bonded with adhesives, and glued-down installation adds a second source; click-fitted floors over a loose underlay avoid that. Wooden floorings also release terpenes from the wood itself, which a laminate surface largely seals in.
