Lung cancer

The cancer most clearly linked to indoor air: radon is its second leading cause after smoking, and secondhand tobacco smoke, coal and biomass smoke from cooking and heating, and fine particulate matter all raise the risk.

Why it matters indoors

Radon accounts for an estimated 3–14 % of lung cancers depending on national radon levels, and the risk multiplies with smoking. Household combustion of solid fuel is a major cause in regions that still cook and heat with coal or wood indoors; secondhand smoke raises non-smokers’ risk by roughly a quarter; and long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ is classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

What helps

Radon testing and mitigation (sub-slab depressurisation), smoke-free homes, extraction and cleaner fuels for cooking and heating, filtration where outdoor particles infiltrate.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
