Respiratory tract diseases

Also: respiratory disease, respiratory diseases, respiratory system diseases, chronic respiratory disease

The whole group of conditions affecting the airways and lungs — asthma, chronic obstructive disease, infections and the rest. The category is used where a study reported respiratory disease as one outcome rather than naming which.

Not reviewed by a clinician. This entry describes a disease or a symptom. We are introducing clinical review for pages of this kind; until that reviewer is in place, this page has been written and checked by the Coridum team but not reviewed by a clinician. It is general information and not medical advice. How this library is built is described in How we build this library.

Why it matters indoors

The lung is the organ indoor air reaches first and in full, so this is the largest group of outcomes in the vocabulary, and nearly every factor in it has a result somewhere within the group.

The group is kept for a specific purpose. Mortality registers, hospital statistics and large surveys frequently report respiratory disease as a single category, and a finding of that shape is real evidence that would be falsified by filing it under asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It stays here, with the definition recorded.

Wherever a study names the condition, the narrower slug is used instead, and this one is not added alongside it. The same applies to the direction of the evidence: a result about all respiratory disease cannot be read as a result about any particular disease within it, and an intervention that changes one need not change the group.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
