Sleep duration

Also: sleep length, hours of sleep, sleep time, sleep quality

How long a person sleeps, measured by diary, questionnaire or a wrist-worn device. It is included here because the bedroom is where people spend the longest continuous period in one indoor environment, with the least control over it.

Why it matters indoors

A bedroom is the most demanding indoor environment to get right. It is occupied for seven or eight hours without interruption, usually with the door closed, by someone who cannot notice or correct anything while it is happening — which is why bedroom carbon dioxide commonly reaches concentrations that would be considered unacceptable in an office, and why the effect of that has been studied directly.

Experiments that change bedroom ventilation without telling the sleepers report shorter time awake and better next-day performance in the better-ventilated condition. Temperature acts on sleep through a well-described physiological route: the body lowers its core temperature to fall asleep, and a room too warm for that prevents it.

The measurement deserves care. Self-reported duration and device-measured duration differ systematically, and quality and duration are not the same variable; the caveat records which was measured and how.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
