Vinyl flooring

Part of: Flooring

Also: PVC flooring, vinyl floor, polyvinyl chloride flooring, linoleum substitute, vinyl tiles

Floor covering made of polyvinyl chloride, supplied as sheet, tile or plank. Because the polymer is rigid on its own, it is softened with plasticisers that are not chemically bound to it — which is what makes the floor a long-term source rather than a surface.

Where it comes from indoors

A vinyl floor is a large area of polymer holding a plasticiser that can leave it. Phthalates make up a substantial fraction of the material by weight and are mixed in rather than bonded, so they migrate to the surface and partition slowly into air and dust for as long as the floor is down. Surveys of house dust find the signature of the floor covering in it, and rooms with vinyl floors differ measurably from rooms without.

Two factors govern the rate. Temperature — underfloor heating raises it substantially — and area, since a floor is usually the largest single surface in a room.

Two further contributions belong to the installation rather than the material: the adhesive beneath it, and what happens when it is laid over a screed that is still damp, where alkaline moisture can degrade both the adhesive and the backing into compounds neither was meant to release.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
