Air quality monitoring

Also: indoor air quality monitoring, continuous monitoring, air monitoring, monitoring system

Measuring indoor air continuously over time, rather than taking a sample and analysing it later. What monitoring produces is a record of when concentrations changed — which is usually more actionable than knowing the average.

What it is

A laboratory measurement answers what the concentration was over the sampling period, accurately. A monitor answers when it rose, roughly — and for a household that is the more useful question, because it connects a number to an action: the hob, the shower, the vacuum cleaner, the closed bedroom door.

The design decisions that matter are few. Which quantities are measured, since carbon dioxide, particles, humidity and temperature between them cover most of what a dwelling can act on. Where the device stands, because a monitor in the hallway describes the hallway. How it was calibrated, and against what. And whether anyone sees the output, since a monitor whose data nobody reads changes nothing.

Its limits are those of its sensors: a summed volatile signal is not a compound, and an optical particle reading depends on assumptions the instrument makes. A monitor tells a household when to act, not what the exposure was.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
