Cookstoves

Also: cookstove, cooking stove, traditional stove, three-stone fire, biomass stove

The appliance in which household cooking fuel is burned, from a three-stone open fire to a manufactured stove with a chimney. In exposure research the stove, not the fuel, is often the thing that changes — and it is the stove that decides how completely the fuel burns.

Where it comes from indoors

Fuel and appliance are separate variables and the appliance is usually the stronger one. The same firewood burned on an open fire, in an enclosed stove with a controlled air inlet, and in a stove with a chimney gives three different kitchens, because what determines the emission is the temperature of the fire, the air reaching it and where the products go.

Three features are worth recording for any stove in a study. Whether combustion air is controlled, which decides how complete the burn is. Whether there is a flue, which decides how much of the product leaves the room rather than the fire. And where the stove stands — a kitchen separated from the sleeping rooms produces a different exposure from a stove in the single room a family lives in.

Households rarely own one stove. Stacking — keeping the old fire for some tasks — is the normal case, not the exception.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
