Type 2 diabetes

Also: diabetes mellitus type 2, adult-onset diabetes, T2DM, non-insulin-dependent diabetes

Raised blood glucose arising from resistance to insulin and a failing insulin response, diagnosed by blood testing. It is the metabolic endpoint through which air pollution research has extended beyond the lung and the heart.

We are introducing clinical review for pages of this kind; until that reviewer is in place, this page has been written and checked by the Coridum team but not reviewed by a clinician. It is general information and not medical advice. How this library is built is described in How we build this library.

Why it matters indoors

The proposed chain is inflammatory. Fine particles reaching the alveoli provoke a systemic response, and chronic low-grade inflammation impairs insulin signalling — which would make diabetes a consequence of particle exposure by the same route as vascular disease rather than by a metabolic one.

Indoor evidence is thinner than the outdoor evidence it borrows from, and it comes mostly from cohorts in which households are classified by cooking and heating fuel. Those studies report higher prevalence and incidence where solid fuel is used, and lower risk where households have switched to clean fuel.

Confounding is the central difficulty and it is severe. Fuel use tracks income, diet, physical work and body weight, each of which is a stronger determinant of diabetes than anything in the air — so an association of this kind is weak evidence unless the analysis handled them, and Coridum records what was adjusted for in the caveat rather than treating the estimate as if it stood alone.

Each row is one Finding — a sentence as printed in one study, recorded with its page in the Coridum Knowledge Base. Follow the Finding number for the exact wording and the citation. Checked says who verified the row: machine means every automatic check passed and the surrounding text was read; person means someone read the sentence in the document. Rows are re-checked by a person over time. The studies are curated in the Coridum Knowledge Base; the reading of them together is a Claim, shown separately.
